The Sparrow detector family is celebrated for its low size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) profile. Since its 2020 introduction, over 8,000 units have been sold or ordered. A key differentiator is SCD’s mature, third-generation High Operating Temperature (HOT) technology. Unlike competitors who are still prototyping earlier-generation HOT, SCD has over 15 years of experience and manufactures thousands of these field-proven detectors annually. This vertical control over development and fabrication ensures high reliability, exceptional performance, and consistent delivery.
The Sparrow’s design emphasizes maximum integration flexibility. It is available in HOT XBn and HFM formats and can be configured in vertical or horizontal orientations. This allows for rapid deployment across a wide array of platforms, including handheld imagers, loitering munitions, tactical UAVs, and remote weapon stations. Additional advantages include a fast time-to-image, a simple industry-standard electrical interface, and low noise.
Building on the Sparrow’s success, SCD also developed the Sparrow-HD, which incorporates the industry’s first 5μm pixel pitch for substantially improved detection and identification ranges.
Company executives stated that this large order highlights the accelerating demand for compact, high-performance IR detectors. They credited the Sparrow series’ rapid integration cycles and operational flexibility for meeting the customer’s stringent requirements for performance, reliability, and deployment, reinforcing SCD’s commitment to customer success in multi-domain platforms.
