Airbus Helicopters has officially delivered the first H160 multi-role helicopter to the French Gendarmerie Nationale, marking a pivotal step in the national police force’s fleet renewal program. The handover ceremony took place at the company’s Marignane headquarters, with the aircraft received by the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA).

This initial delivery is part of a ten-helicopter order placed by the DGA in December 2021 on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior. The H160 now becomes the largest rotorcraft ever operated by the Gendarmerie, significantly expanding its operational capabilities for demanding security and public service missions.

Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, emphasized the collaborative nature of the program. “This is the result of close cooperation to develop a solution entirely dedicated to critical security missions,” he stated. He also highlighted the strategic synergy with France’s future military aviation, noting that the ongoing development of the H160M Guépard army variant creates shared benefits in performance and interoperability for French forces.

The new H160 fleet will complement the Gendarmerie’s recently delivered H145 helicopters, creating a versatile tactical duo. The two types share key systems, including the advanced Helionix avionics suite and mission equipment, which streamlines pilot training, maintenance, and operational coordination.

This first delivery initiates a comprehensive integration process, with entry into full service expected by early 2027. This phase encompasses crew qualification, technical training, and the establishment of operational procedures. The helicopter’s support package, managed directly by Airbus, includes technical assistance, strategically located spare parts stocks, and connected digital services.

As the latest-generation helicopter in its class, the EASA-certified H160 brings enhanced flight safety features and is designed for reduced operating costs. Its streamlined maintenance program and high availability are set to provide the Gendarmerie with a reliable and efficient aerial asset for years to come, modernizing its capacity to protect French citizens and territory.
