Elbit Systems has been awarded a significant $150 million contract from BAE Systems Hägglunds to equip NATO-operated CV90 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) with its Iron Fist Active Protection System (APS). This decision follows a landmark live-fire demonstration in late 2025, where Iron Fist repeatedly defeated high-velocity tank rounds, a critical capability for modern armored warfare.

The demonstration, attended by senior European military officials, proved pivotal. During the trial, the Iron Fist APS successfully intercepted multiple 120mm APFSDS kinetic energy projectiles, among the most formidable threats to armored vehicles. This live validation against such advanced munitions is uncommon in the APS domain and directly addressed core survivability concerns for frontline mechanized units.

Designed as a compact, hard-kill defense system, Iron Fist provides armored platforms with 360-degree protection. It counters a broad spectrum of battlefield dangers, from traditional anti-tank rockets and guided missiles to modern challenges like loitering munitions, drones, and kinetic-energy tank fire. Its selection by NATO forces underscores a strategic shift towards integrating proactive, hard-kill defenses to enhance platform survivability against evolving threats.

“The recent trial results solidify the confidence that Western armies are placing in Iron Fist,” stated Yehuda (Udi) Vered, General Manager of Elbit Systems Land. “Our strong partnership with BAE Systems Hägglunds is key to delivering this advanced protection to more forces across Europe, directly enhancing the operational resilience of allied troops.”

This contract signifies more than a procurement award; it represents a major step in the defense modernization of key NATO fleets. Integrating Iron Fist onto the widely fielded CV90 IFV will substantially boost the protective capabilities of European mechanized brigades, ensuring these critical assets are better prepared for the high-intensity battlefields of today and tomorrow. The decision marks a growing consensus within the alliance on the indispensable role of active protection in future combat operations.
