Germany has finalized a major defense acquisition, ordering eight MQ-9B SeaGuardian Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA). The contract with manufacturer General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) also includes four Certifiable Ground Control Stations, with the first aircraft slated for delivery in 2028.

This procurement significantly enhances Germany’s maritime surveillance and security posture. The MQ-9B SeaGuardian is renowned for its extreme endurance and long range, capable of persistent wide-area maritime monitoring. Its advanced suite includes two multi-mode surface-search radars and features like pole-to-pole satellite control and de-icing systems, allowing operations in harsh, cold-weather environments. A key attribute is its certified Detect and Avoid System, which enables flights in unsegregated airspace, increasing its versatility for domestic and allied missions. The platform also offers an optional Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capability, which could integrate with Germany’s fleet of P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

The purchase aligns Germany with a growing coalition of NATO allies operating the MQ-9B platform, including Belgium, Canada, and Poland. This commonality is a strategic priority, fostering greater interoperability for joint training and multinational operations across the Alliance. The deal was facilitated under NSPA’s established MQ-9 Support Partnership framework, designed to streamline multinational acquisitions and lifecycle support for member nations.

“We’re thrilled that Germany has joined the list of NATO countries that have selected MQ-9B SeaGuardian,” said GA-ASI CEO Linden Blue. “The proliferation of MQ-9B in Europe delivers commonality between NATO countries and for Germany, it will provide opportunities for interoperability with their fleet of P-8As.”

NSPA General Manager Stacy A. Cummings emphasized the agency’s role, stating, “This Support Partnership demonstrates how NSPA enables efficient, effective and responsive multinational acquisitions for advanced, interoperable capabilities. We are proud to support Germany in this strategic investment.”

The MQ-9B platform, which includes the SkyGuardian and the UK’s Protector RG Mk1 variants, has achieved significant certification milestones, including a Military Type Certificate from the UK in 2025. This certifies its safe operation without geographic restrictions, underscoring its advanced design. With this order, Germany invests in a proven, multi-domain system that will bolster its national defense and reinforce its contributions to collective NATO security for decades to come.
