Babcock International has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Frankenburg Technologies to jointly explore the development of a new, affordable maritime air defence system. This collaboration is a direct response to the escalating and pervasive threat posed by one-way attack drones, which have altered modern warfare dynamics.
The core of the partnership will focus on creating a cost-effective, containerised launch platform for Frankenburg’s newly developed low-cost missiles. These missiles are being manufactured at pace specifically to neutralise drone threats. By integrating Babcock’s deep maritime systems expertise with Frankenburg’s rapid, innovative approach to missile production, the alliance aims to deliver a vital defensive capability that is both scalable and kinetic.
This joint initiative seeks to address a critical gap in current defences, aiming to protect naval vessels, military personnel, and critical national infrastructure. The solution is designed for the European theatre and beyond, where such threats are increasingly prevalent. Importantly, with Frankenburg’s engineering leadership based in the UK, the project will foster a new sovereign capability, generating skilled employment and presenting significant global export opportunities for both companies.
David Lockwood, CEO of Babcock, commented on the strategic move: “Defence has entered a new era with the rapid development of drone warfare, and industry needs to respond to this growing threat. We work with the brightest start-ups on defence’s most critical challenges, and we’re pleased to be working with Frankenburg Technologies on the development of an innovative maritime counter-drone air defence system.”
Echoing this sentiment, Kusti Salm, CEO of Frankenburg Technologies, stated: “Frankenburg Technologies’ mission is clear: to bring affordability and scale to modern air defence. The drone threat has changed the character of warfare, and every layer of defence now needs to be designed for mass and speed from the outset. Partnering with Babcock, a recognised leader in maritime defence, allows us to combine rapid innovation with proven naval and industrial expertise, accelerating the delivery of an operational maritime capability.”
The partnership signifies a proactive step by industry leaders to adapt to evolving asymmetrical threats, prioritising speed, affordability, and deployability in next-generation naval defence.
