Space Junk Threatens Our Future. Immediate Action Required.

by BDR Staff

Space is getting crowded. With the rapid launch of mega-constellations, the risk of collision is higher than ever. Fortunately, the space community is fighting back with a concrete plan: the Zero Debris Charter. Led by ESA, this initiative aims to stop the creation of orbital trash entirely by 2030, mandating that missions design for responsible disposal from the start.

The stakes are immense. Currently, millions of debris fragments—some as small as a coin—streak through orbit at lethal speeds. They threaten critical infrastructure like communications and weather monitoring. If left unchecked, we risk triggering the Kessler Syndrome, a runaway chain of collisions that could trap us on a planet with a unusable orbital shell.

Experts like NLR CEO Tineke van der Veen emphasize that this is a defining moment. NLR is actively developing solutions, from advanced collision modeling to promoting “self-cleaning” Very Low Earth Orbits (VLEO), where drag ensures rapid debris decay. The charter isn’t just a policy; it’s a shift in mindset, proving that with coordinated innovation, we can keep space open for business and discovery.
