Bell Textron has secured a major deal in Africa, as the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) commits to a fleet of seven Bell 407GXis. Signed during the VAI Verticon 2026 event, the agreement marks a significant upgrade for the utility company’s aerial capabilities, replacing older assets with modern, technology-rich aircraft.

The selection of the Bell 407GXi underscores a shift toward advanced avionics in critical infrastructure protection. The helicopter features the Garmin G1000H NXi integrated flight deck, an all-glass suite that projects critical safety data directly to the pilots. This setup is designed to improve situational awareness and reduce cognitive load, particularly crucial during the long-line and precision flying required for powerline maintenance.

Beyond its glass cockpit, the aircraft is built for tough environments. Its single-pilot IFR capability ensures the NTCSA can conduct missions even when weather conditions deteriorate, a key requirement for emergency management scenarios. The flexible interior can be reconfigured to carry repair crews or transport equipment to remote job sites.

Bell’s leadership highlighted the aircraft’s reputation as a reliable workhorse. Tim Evans, Managing Director for the region, expressed pride in supporting the NTCSA’s expansion, noting that the 407GXi is perfectly suited for the diverse demands of utility operators across Africa.

For the NTCSA, the timing supports a historic build program. CEO Monde Bala confirmed that the modernized fleet will play a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of the existing grid while overseeing the construction of thousands of kilometers of new transmission lines.
