Redwire Corporation announced it has been awarded a prime contract by Belgian Defence to deliver MATTEO, the country’s first national security satellite. The mission is designed to enhance Belgium’s ability to monitor, protect, and respond to evolving security challenges through resilient and independent space-based capabilities.
Built through a close collaboration between Redwire and Aerospacelab, MATTEO will leverage local manufacturing to support Belgium’s Defence Industrial and Technology Base. The in-orbit demonstrator will enable Belgian Defence to advance its space capabilities in partnership with national industry.
“MATTEO will fully contribute to this necessary shift,” a Belgian Defence spokesperson stated, noting the mission’s role in strengthening European defence readiness. Marc Dielissen, Executive Vice-President of Redwire Europe, added that the company is honored to support such a strategically important mission.
With more than 50 years of heritage at its Belgium facility—including work on ESA’s Proba-1, Proba-2, Proba-V, and Proba-3 missions—Redwire brings extensive spacecraft development experience. The company is also prime contractor for ESA’s Skimsat mission, another technology demonstrator backed by the Belgian government and its Ministry of Defence.
