RAF personnel become first drone ‘aces’ in Middle East operations.

RAF Regiment gunners have made history, becoming the first personnel to achieve “ace” status by shooting down five or more hostile drones during operations in the Middle East. The title, borrowed from Second World War aviation tradition, marks a modern evolution in air defence.

Operating under constant threat, the four gunners used a sophisticated system combining early-warning sensors, electronic warfare, and the Rapid Sentry air defence system armed with Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM). Their success underscores the growing threat from Iranian uncrewed systems and complex swarming technologies targeting UK forces and allies in the region.

One gunner, part of a unit where some operators are as young as 18 and just months out of training, described the intensity of the mission: “Under constant threat, we are responsible for detecting, tracking and engaging targets, often while coming under fire… We take immense pride in our role.”

Minister for the Armed Forces Al Carns MP praised their professionalism, saying: “Several of these heroes have achieved ‘ace’ status neutralising Iranian drones. The first of its kind, it isn’t just impressive, it is exceptional.”

Wing Commander Richard Maughan noted that during 23–24 March, the unit delivered the most effective defensive outcome in a single night to date. Air Cdre Paul Hamilton added: “They are genuinely putting their own lives at risk in the defence of others.”

The achievement comes as the UK deploys Rapid Sentry to Kuwait and expands its LMM procurement. Thales UK’s Belfast-built missiles have proven highly effective in the region.

Reflecting on their role, one gunner said: “We are proud to represent the next generation of the Corps.”
