AirBorneo picks ATRs to upgrade its East Malaysia fleet.

AirBorneo and ATR have announced a strategic partnership to modernize Malaysia’s vital Rural Air Services (RAS) network, with the airline placing a firm order for eight new-generation ATR aircraft. The order, finalised in late 2025, includes five ATR 72-600s and three ATR 42-600s, with deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2029. The agreement also includes purchase rights for four additional aircraft.

This significant investment marks a key step in AirBorneo’s evolution following the Sarawak government’s acquisition of MASwings in 2025 and its rebranding into the state-owned carrier. AirBorneo now assumes responsibility for the essential RAS network, which connects remote communities across Sarawak, Sabah, and Labuan. The new ATRs will replace the airline’s existing fleet of eight inherited ATR 72-500s, forming the backbone of a more efficient and resilient operation.

The mixed fleet strategy provides AirBorneo with unmatched flexibility. The ATR 42-600, renowned for its efficiency on lower-density routes, and the higher-capacity ATR 72-600 will allow the airline to right-size aircraft to diverse route profiles across Borneo. Both aircraft types feature advanced avionics, modern navigation systems, and improved cabin comfort. They are specifically equipped to support critical services like medical stretcher operations and are optimised for reliable performance in the region’s challenging environments.

Beyond enhancing the core RAS network, the order and purchase rights position AirBorneo for future growth, including potential regional expansion within the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

“This partnership with ATR marks a major milestone in AirBorneo’s commitment to delivering reliable, safe and modern air services,” said Megat Ardian, Chief Executive Officer of AirBorneo. “Our new ATR -600 fleet will significantly strengthen the Rural Air Services network by offering improved comfort, greater efficiency and the operational capability required for regional connectivity in East Malaysia.”

Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, added, “AirBorneo’s decision to invest in both the ATR 72-600 and ATR 42-600 reflects the strength and versatility of the ATR family. We are proud to partner with AirBorneo in strengthening reliable air connectivity across Borneo and the wider region.”
