Elbit Systems to equip Israeli UH-60 Black Hawk fleet with advanced helmet displays.

Elbit Systems has secured a contract to supply its Helmet Display and Tracking System (HDTS) for the Israeli Air Force’s fleet of UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, known locally as “Yanshuf.” The advanced system is designed to significantly enhance pilot situational awareness and flight safety during complex missions.

The HDTS is an operationally proven solution that projects critical flight data directly onto the aircrew’s visor. By generating a real-time, 3D Synthetic Vision Symbology (SVS), it provides pilots with a clear digital depiction of the surrounding terrain, obstacles, and their intended flight path. This capability is particularly vital in Degraded Visual Environments (DVE), such as thick fog, heavy precipitation, dust storms, or nighttime operations, where natural vision is severely limited.

One of the system’s most critical functions is its support during brownout conditions—a common hazard when helicopters take off or land in desert environments. The rotor downwash kicks up dense clouds of dust that can completely obscure the ground. In these moments, the HDTS displays a synthetic landing zone, offering pilots a continuous, accurate mental picture of their position relative to the ground. This synthetic vision preserves critical safety margins and is often the deciding factor between a successful mission and a catastrophic accident.

The technology relies on precise Line of Sight (LOS) head tracking. This ensures that the helmet’s symbology is perfectly aligned with wherever the pilot is looking, creating an intuitive interface. It also allows for seamless coordination between cockpit crew members, as each can access and share mission-critical information based on their role. The system’s open and modular architecture allows for integration with a wide array of onboard sensors, including thermal imaging, navigation systems, and obstacle detectors, ensuring continuous, all-weather operational capability.

Yoram Shmuely, General Manager of Elbit Systems Aerospace, commented on the significance of the deal. “We are proud to continue our longstanding and successful cooperation with the Israeli Air Force,” he stated. He emphasized that the program represents a broader industry shift, moving from basic head-up displays to fully integrated aircrew solutions. “This program further strengthens Elbit’s position as a next-generation provider… marking the transition from basic helmet-mounted displays to a fully operational system that unites display, precise head tracking, synthetic symbology, and multi-sensor integration.” The contract reinforces Elbit’s status as a global leader in helmet-mounted technology for a wide range of aircraft platforms.
