The Hellenic Navy has officially contracted Schiebel to provide multiple CAMCOPTER® S-100 Unmanned Air Systems (UAS), which will be deployed aboard its newest fleet of FDI Belharra-class frigates. The acquisition marks a significant leap in the navy’s aerial surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, integrating advanced unmanned technology with surface combatants.

The first of these vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) systems is slated for installation aboard the HS Kimon in the spring of 2026. The frigate, which arrived in Greek waters in January, will serve as the initial platform for the drone. Alongside the ship-based units, the Hellenic Navy will also operate a land-based system dedicated to training and maintaining operator proficiency. Initial training for Greek crews is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2026.

The remaining S-100 units will be assigned to the sister ships, HS Nearchos and HS Formion, which are expected to be delivered in late 2026 and early 2027, respectively. A key advantage of the integration is that the French-built frigates come pre-configured for the CAMCOPTER® S-100, allowing for rapid installation and seamless operational merging.

Designed for rugged maritime environments, the S-100 features a coaxial rotor system that eliminates the need for a tail rotor, enhancing stability during takeoffs and landings on moving decks. The Hellenic Navy’s configuration will include a Wescam MX-10 EO/IR camera gimbal and an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch sensor. This payload suite enables the drone to conduct persistent Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions over vast distances.

The drones will support a broad spectrum of naval operations, including maritime security patrols, search and rescue, exclusive economic zone (EEZ) monitoring, and environmental observation. Furthermore, the system’s capacity to carry specialized payloads will contribute to Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) efforts, significantly extending the sensory reach of the frigates.

Hans Georg Schiebel, Chairman of the Schiebel Group, expressed pride in the selection, emphasizing that the S-100’s proven maritime performance and payload flexibility will provide Greek commanders with enhanced situational awareness, ultimately strengthening the operational capabilities of the fleet’s surface forces.
