The Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD) has signed a deal worth approximately $130 million with Elbit Systems to equip the Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) forthcoming fleet of CH-53K “Pereh” helicopters with advanced, domestically developed systems. The agreement, finalized by the Defense Procurement Directorate (DPD), will see the integration of Israeli technologies onto 12 new heavy-lift rotorcraft, which are slated to replace the IAF’s aging “Yas’ur” helicopters.
The new helicopters are being acquired through a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement between Israel and the U.S. government, with manufacturing by Lockheed Martin-Sikorsky underway at their Connecticut facility. Once assembled, the aircraft will proceed to a specialized integration line designed to tailor the American-configuration helicopters to the unique operational demands of the IAF.
Under this contract, Elbit Systems will outfit the CH-53K fleet with a suite of Israeli-made systems. These include advanced command and control suites, sophisticated avionics, and electronic warfare capabilities. A key component of the upgrade is the integration of a Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) system, designed to protect the aircraft from missile threats. These enhancements are intended to improve the cockpit environment, ensure operational capability in challenging conditions, and assist pilots in identifying safe landing zones and obstacles.
Defense Minister Israel Katz hailed the agreement as a significant step for the IDF. “This deal marks a major milestone in strengthening the IDF and securing the Israeli Air Force’s operational edge for years ahead,” he stated. “Integrating cutting-edge Israeli systems into the world’s most advanced heavy-lift helicopter ensures these platforms are fully adapted to Israel’s unique combat requirements.”
IMOD Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram emphasized the strategic importance of the helicopter program within the broader IDF force build-up. He noted that the integration of Israeli technology into a leading global platform showcases the capabilities of the nation’s defense industries.
Elbit Systems CEO Bezhalel Machlis expressed pride in participating in the flagship project. He confirmed that the systems provided represent the forefront of the company’s proven technology, tailored to provide an optimal technological envelope for mission execution and pilot safety.
