At the Singapore Airshow 2026, Leonardo formalized a major step in its Southeast Asian expansion by signing a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence and local partner PT ESystem Solutions. The agreement outlines a cooperative framework for the procurement, support, and localized sustainment of the Leonardo M-346 FA “Block 20” light fighter aircraft, designated to fulfill operational requirements of the Indonesian Air Force.
This development confirms the M-346 as the platform of choice for Indonesia’s broader fleet modernization strategy. The aircraft is poised to replace aging combat jet fleets, including the BAE Systems Hawk, bringing advanced technological capabilities to the nation’s defense architecture. The program is designed not only as an acquisition but as a strategic partnership, emphasizing human capital development and the localization of maintenance, overhaul, and training capabilities within Indonesia.
The advanced “Block 20” configuration of the M-346 FA offers a significant leap in capability. It features a modern cockpit equipped with a Large Area Display (LAD), an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, a Link 16 data-link, and comprehensive electronic countermeasures. These systems enable the platform to perform a versatile range of air-to-air and air-to-surface missions, enhanced by mission systems that include aerial refueling capability. While serving as a light fighter, the platform retains its core DNA as a comprehensive advanced flight training system, integrating with a Ground Based Training System (GBTS) that employs Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) simulation logic to maximize pilot readiness.
The LOI sets the stage for final contractual negotiations, which both parties aim to conclude in the near future. Leonardo’s M-346 family has established a significant global footprint, with nearly 160 aircraft sold and over 150,000 flight hours logged. It currently serves the training and operational needs of 20 countries. The platform’s versatility is underscored by its selection by the Italian Air Force not only for pilot training and international programs like the International Flight Training School but also as the future aircraft for the renowned “Frecce Tricolori” national aerobatic team, validating its high-performance handling and maneuverability.
