In a significant move for European defence cooperation, the Netherlands has officially signed a contract to acquire three additional NH90 NFH maritime helicopters. The agreement, formalized between NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA) and manufacturer NHIndustries (NHI), reinforces the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force’s (RNLAF) long-standing commitment to the multinational programme.
The Netherlands, a founding member of the NH90 initiative since 1999, has consistently relied on the platform. “This contract is yet another new chapter to our long-standing cooperation in the NH90,” said Colonel Dominique Troquete, Deputy JEC of the Netherlands. He highlighted the helicopter’s proven track record since its first operational deployment in 2013, calling it “an indispensable asset.”
The new aircraft will be assembled by Leonardo in Italy and delivered with the latest Block-1 upgrade package (Software Release 3). This enhancement includes cutting-edge technologies such as Data Link 22 for secure communication, a next-generation electro-optical system, new integrated sonics, and expanded weaponry options.
These upgrades will provide the RNLAF with substantially increased operational capability. The helicopters will excel in long-range surveillance, target identification, and engagement, while seamlessly sharing encrypted tactical data with allied assets. This ensures superior interoperability and effectiveness in modern multi-domain missions.
“The Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force has consistently demonstrated its trust in the NH90 programme,” stated Axel Aloccio, President of NHI. NHI Managing Director Cristian Naso emphasized that the delivery of the advanced-configuration aircraft underscores the programme’s evolution to meet contemporary threats.
Michael Kohlhaas, General Manager of NAHEMA, noted that the Dutch decision “reaffirms the high confidence in a proven and versatile platform,” strengthening both national defence and the broader NH90 programme through sustained industrial cooperation.
Today’s ceremony not only marks a fleet expansion but also solidifies a decades-long strategic partnership. It underscores the Netherlands’ role as a cornerstone of the NH90 programme and represents a shared investment in future readiness and European defence capability.
