Rheinmetall-MBDA JV to develop and produce advanced laser weapons.

Rheinmetall and MBDA are establishing a joint venture in early 2026 to develop and produce high-energy laser weapon systems for the German Navy. This new company builds on a successful partnership active since 2019, which has already produced and tested a demonstrator system at sea.

The venture aims to deliver an operational laser weapon system designed to complement traditional ship defenses. It will provide a precise and effective countermeasure against drones and fast-moving threats at short ranges, with minimal collateral damage.

The underlying technology has proven highly capable in extensive testing. During a year-long sea trial, the demonstrator conducted over 100 engagements, successfully tracking and engaging small, agile targets even in challenging conditions. The system’s precision allows it to focus energy on a minuscule point, such as a coin-sized target at long distance, ensuring maximum effectiveness and safety. Following the sea trials, the demonstrator is now undergoing further land-based testing at the German military’s WTD 91 facility in Meppen.

Company executives highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration. Roman Köhne of Rheinmetall stated the joint venture leverages each partner’s strengths to rapidly deliver unique, cutting-edge technology to the Bundeswehr, while ensuring national technological sovereignty and security of supply. Thomas Gottschild, CEO of MBDA Germany, added that the venture sets new standards for “designed and made in Germany” laser systems, combining core competencies to provide the navy with advanced, operational drone defense capabilities.
