Sweden equips CV90s with Kongsberg weapon systems.

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has secured a major contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to supply its advanced PROTECTOR Remote Weapon Stations (RWS). The framework agreement, valued at over SEK 400 million, will primarily equip three variants of the Swedish Army’s Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) fleet, with provisions to extend deliveries to other vehicle platforms.

This new order centres on the latest PROTECTOR RS4 (Remote Stabilised weapon station with Sensor system version 4), a modernised evolution of the PROTECTOR Nordic systems already in Swedish service. The RS4 variant represents a significant capability leap, integrating enhanced sensor suites and sophisticated fire control systems. It is designed to operate a range of weaponry at extended ranges, allowing crews to identify and engage threats with precision while remaining fully protected inside the vehicle. This technology is critical for enhancing soldier survivability and combat effectiveness in complex, modern battlefields.

“The PROTECTOR RS4 will provide the Swedish Army with a world-class remote weapon station, enhancing the capabilities of the CV90 platform,” stated a Kongsberg representative. “This contract reinforces our long-term partnership with Sweden and underscores the continued trust in our technology.”

The acquisition directly addresses the Swedish armed forces’ operational requirement for modern, remote-controlled weapon systems across its armoured vehicle inventory. The CV90, a cornerstone of Sweden’s mechanised units, will see its lethality and situational awareness substantially upgraded through this integration.

Kongsberg’s PROTECTOR series is already a familiar and integral component within Swedish defence. The system has been previously selected for the Swedish-led Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme’s 6×6 armoured vehicles and is also mounted on the highly mobile Archer artillery system. This latest contract for the CV90 further deepens the standardization of Kongsberg’s remote weapon technology across multiple branches of the Swedish Army, promising benefits in training, logistics, and maintenance.

The agreement includes a clear potential for value growth, as the framework allows for the procurement of additional RWS units to equip other vehicle types beyond the initial CV90 focus. Deliveries under the contract are scheduled to commence in 2025, ensuring a steady modernization of Sweden’s ground combat capabilities.
