The CAPTAS (Combined Active-Passive Towed Array Sonar) is widely regarded as the benchmark for variable depth sonar (VDS) systems. It delivers exceptional performance in detecting the quietest submarine threats, even in the most challenging and acoustically complex ocean environments. This superior detection range provides naval forces with the critical early warning needed to establish and maintain tactical dominance beneath the waves.

A key strength of the CAPTAS system is its versatility. It is designed to provide a full-spectrum anti-submarine capability, including long-range 360-degree surveillance. Its architecture allows for seamless integration onto a wide range of surface vessels, ensuring that even navies with smaller platforms can deploy world-class ASW technology. As a reference solution for NATO allies, CAPTAS also promotes interoperability and joint naval cooperation.

Thales continuously evolves the system by incorporating operational feedback from sailors and leveraging advancements in artificial intelligence. This commitment ensures the technology remains at the forefront of innovation, enhancing multi-sensor data fusion and improving the overall assessment of the underwater battlespace.

“This 100th order is a direct result of our long-standing partnership with over 50 navies worldwide,” said Sébastien Guérémy, Vice-President of Underwater Warfare activities at Thales. “Our deep operational understanding allows us to make CAPTAS the indispensable solution for the anti-submarine missions of today and tomorrow.” This milestone not only reflects past success but also signals the system’s pivotal role in future naval security.
