UK drone sector gets boost as Marshall Aerospace completes five government-backed assessments.

Marshall Aerospace has secured five SAIL Mark assessment projects funded by Innovate UK and the Department for Transport, reinforcing its leadership in the UK’s growing UAS sector.

Awarded through a CAA grant programme, the assessments will support manufacturers in achieving UK operational authorisation. Marshall’s flightworthiness evaluations span SAIL II and SAIL III risk levels, covering drones and flight termination systems for applications ranging from agriculture to security.

“We are proud to deliver these assessments as a trusted engineering partner,” said Mark Hewer, Director for Aero Engineering Services. “Our UAS assessment business is lowering barriers for new entrants while providing authoritative guidance to support the safe, scalable introduction of new products.”

The SAIL Mark scheme, launched by the CAA in March 2025, provides independent technical assurance for operators in the Specific Category. Marshall was one of the first organisations to gain RAE(F) designation, permitting it to conduct these assessments.

Marshall will supply each applicant and the CAA with an independent flightworthiness report, including compliance analysis and a SAIL Mark recommendation, with the CAA making the final award decision.

Under the grant programme, UK and international manufacturers applied for fully-funded assessments. Recipients have been nominated by a panel from Innovate UK and the CAA, and all assessments are due for completion by the end of July 2026.
